What we look for in a credible UK SEO retainer

A short checklist of the deliverables, reporting and team-mix signals that separate a real SEO retainer from a thin one — at every UK price tier.

SEO specialists reviewing organic search performance dashboards

The UK SEO retainer market has a wide cost range — £600/mo at the boutique end, £15,000+/mo at enterprise — and just as wide a quality range. Two retainers at the same price can look identical on the deck and produce wildly different outcomes twelve months in.

Here are the signals we look for when reading a credible SEO proposal at any tier.

Quantified deliverables, not adjectives

“Ongoing optimisation” is not a deliverable. A real proposal commits to numbers:

  • Pages of technical audit per quarter
  • Briefed content pieces per month
  • Earned links per month, with quality bands
  • Hours of consultation with named people

If those numbers aren’t on the page, you can’t hold the agency to anything.

A tier-appropriate team mix

Boutique retainers should have a senior practitioner on the work — that’s what you’re paying for. Mid-market should pair a senior strategist with one or two delivery leads. Enterprise should have specialist sub-pods (technical, content, links, international).

If the agency tier doesn’t match the team mix on the deck, you’re either underpaying for what you need or overpaying for what you’ll get.

Sensible reporting cadence

Monthly is the floor. The report should always include:

  • Rankings against an agreed keyword universe
  • Organic traffic and conversion delta vs baseline
  • What was shipped this month, what’s shipping next

A standing 30-minute review call beats a 30-page deck nobody reads.

Every credible 2026 SEO retainer mentions AEO/GEO — schema work, AI-citation tracking, prompt-mode keyword research. Agencies that haven’t thought about it aren’t focused on fundamentals; they’re behind.

A check, not a leap

If you’d like to ground-truth what your proposal should cost, the SEO calculator returns a typical UK monthly range based on site size, keyword scope, technical complexity and link cadence — usually inside a minute.
